Trump invited Amodei personally after a scheduling conflict kept the Anthropic CEO away from Thursday’s state dinner for Chinese President Xi Jinping, where Elon Musk, Apple’s Tim Cook, OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Nvidia’s Jensen Huang sat at the head table, according to Forbes. Axios described Sunday’s dinner as a sign of thawing relations after what it called a difficult year between the two men.

The thaw has not stopped the political attacks. On September 14, Trump targeted Amodei directly on Truth Social, mocking him over his calls to slow AI development, and a memo from a Trump political adviser has separately cast the Anthropic CEO as a leading voice of AI “doomerism,” the belief that AI development poses an existential threat to humanity.

A White House official described the administration’s broader position to Axios: “President Trump has been clear: America will lead the world in Super Intelligence, while protecting American consumers.”
