How Most DeFi Traders Unknowingly Send Their Orders to Traditional Wall Street Market Makers

BlockWest News Team DeFi & Web3, Digital Assets, Solana DeFi, Jupiter aggregator, market makers, Solana, tokenized equities

Proprietary automated market makers now dominate execution on Solana’s most liquid pairs, reshaping how decentralized finance handles order routing and raising questions about market structure as Wall Street prepares to tokenize equities on blockchain rails. Understanding this shift is essential as traditional finance migrates onto crypto infrastructure and the definition of transparency in DeFi evolves beyond simple openness.

PropAMMs account for approximately 15% to 27% of daily on-chain DEX volume across crypto markets generally.
For SOL-to-stablecoin trades routed through Jupiter, propAMMs represent above 90% of execution volume.
Nasdaq, the London Stock Exchange, Robinhood, and Kraken are building tokenized equity frameworks set to launch in 2027.

Jupiter operates not as a direct trading venue but as a liquidity aggregator, searching across decentralized exchanges, proprietary automated market makers, and request-for-quote networks to find optimal execution for users. When a trader swaps SOL for USDC on Jupiter’s interface, the order routes invisibly through whichever liquidity source offers the best price, meaning the counterparty is often a professional trading firm with proprietary pricing software rather than a public pool or another user. A new analysis from DWF Ventures reveals that this shift toward professional market makers has accelerated dramatically, particularly on Solana where block times and transaction costs favor rapid repricing.

Professional Market Makers Now Dominate Solana’s Busiest Pairs

PropAMMs emerged as a response to a fundamental problem in early DeFi automated market makers: passive liquidity pools price assets using formulas rather than real-time market data, creating opportunities for arbitrageurs to exploit stale quotes. A professional AMM works differently. Instead of relying on external liquidity providers, a trading firm supplies its own capital and uses private software to continuously adjust quotes based on external market prices. The transaction settles on-chain, but the pricing decision happens within the firm’s own systems.

For highly liquid pairs like SOL-USDC, this model has proven superior to traditional AMMs. Jump Crypto examined approximately 20 million propAMM fills from March 2024 and found that the median execution occurred 0.72 basis points away from centralized exchange midpoints, with 91.9% of fills executing cheaper than the lowest institutional centralized exchange fee tier. The appeal is straightforward: professional market makers with access to external price feeds and sophisticated inventory management can offer tighter execution than passive pools. These firms compete fiercely for order flow, which drives prices tighter across the market.

Solana’s Speed Enables Proprietary Market Making at Scale

Solana’s block-time advantage directly supports propAMM economics. Ethereum operates with 12-second slots, while Solana targets 300-millisecond transaction confirmation times, reducing the window in which market makers face stale-price exposure and arbitrage risk.

Professional trading firms obsess over price staleness. A market maker quoting SOL at $100 faces severe losses if that quote remains live while the rest of the market reprices to $101. Faster settlement and repricing cycles mean smaller losses per outdated quote, making it economical for firms to compete aggressively for order flow. This explains why propAMMs have concentrated on Solana relative to other blockchains and why Jupiter’s aggregator architecture, which can seamlessly route to the best available liquidity source across multiple systems, has become the dominant interface for Solana trading. The economic advantage compounds over millions of trades daily.

Wall Street Tokenized Assets Will Likely Use Professional Market Making Instead of Public Pools

Nasdaq announced Thursday that its venture arm agreed to invest $100 million in Payward, Kraken’s parent company, while continuing development of Nasdaq Equity Tokens, with a framework launch expected in the second quarter of 2027. The London Stock Exchange announced a separate partnership with Payward around tokenized equities and plans to list xStocks for trading on its LSE 24 venue in 2027, subject to regulatory approval. Robinhood has already deployed tokenized stocks through Robinhood Chain using request-for-quote systems that connect to professional market makers rather than public AMM liquidity. These decisions reflect confidence that professional market-making infrastructure can handle established assets more efficiently than permissionless pools.

The significance lies not in whether traditional assets move onto blockchain rails, but in what market structure they adopt when they arrive. Mature assets like Apple shares, Treasuries, or major cryptocurrencies have deep reference markets with professional dealers willing to manage inventory around them. When these assets become tokenized and settle on a blockchain, they will not naturally default to the permissionless public pool model that defined early DeFi. Instead, traders will route orders through professional market makers competing to provide the best execution, settled transparently on-chain but priced through private trading infrastructure. This hybrid approach preserves on-chain settlement transparency while leveraging off-chain price discovery.

This creates a different version of DeFi market structure than the original vision imagined: blockchains can expose settlement and ownership to public verification without exposing the machinery of price formation.

The market-structure implications extend further. Routers like Jupiter decide which firms are allowed to compete, which liquidity sources receive orders, and how quotes are compared before execution. As block builders, transaction landing systems, and market makers begin to overlap in influence, questions that traditional finance spent decades regulating come into focus on blockchains. What exactly constitutes best execution when multiple layers can influence price and routing? When a single entity controls aggregation, market making, transaction delivery, or block building, does that create conflicts of interest around order priority? Blockworks Research found evidence of this already, examining periods when certain market makers received faster price updates from validators than competitors, though the advantage later disappeared.

The DWF Ventures analysis also notes that traditional AMMs will likely survive for assets without mature outside reference markets. Token launches with no existing price discovery mechanism still need permissionless liquidity pools to establish initial trading. The division may ultimately reflect what each market structure does best: professional dealers and routers for established assets with deep trading communities elsewhere, public AMMs for the long tail of new tokens needing to discover price without waiting for institutional participation. Regulatory frameworks remain underdeveloped for how blockchain-based market making should be overseen or whether existing equity market regulations apply to tokenized securities. Nasdaq’s scheduled framework launch in Q2 2027 will provide the first major test of whether tokenized equities routing through blockchain infrastructure adopt the professional dealer model wholesale or create a hybrid approach that preserves elements of permissionless access.

Nasdaq Proposes $100 Million Investment in Payward to Strengthen Kraken Partnership

BlockWest News Team Digital Assets, Institutional & TradFi Crypto, RWA & Tokenization cryptocurrency infrastructure, Kraken, market surveillance, Nasdaq, tokenized equities

Nasdaq’s proposed $100 million investment in Payward deepens the exchange’s stakes in cryptocurrency infrastructure and tokenized equities, while expanding Kraken’s role as a critical intermediary for regulated digital assets. The dual commitments signal confidence in the 2027 launch of Nasdaq Equity Tokens, even as regulatory and technical hurdles remain unresolved.

Nasdaq Ventures will invest $100 million in Payward, Kraken’s parent company, under a proposed agreement with no disclosed closing date or valuation terms.
Payward will deploy Nasdaq market-surveillance technology across crypto, equities, tokenized equities, futures and options trading venues.
Nasdaq Equity Tokens are now expected to launch in the second quarter of 2027, with Payward embedded as a gateway, settlement participant and surveillance customer.

$100M Nasdaq Ventures investment in Payward, deepening prior tokenized-equity partnership
Q2 2027 Expected launch window for Nasdaq Equity Tokens with Payward integration

Nasdaq has committed to a $100 million investment in Payward, the parent holding of crypto exchange Kraken, while the two companies expand their existing partnership on tokenized equities and market surveillance. The investment, announced September 10, pairs new capital with a technology-sharing agreement under which Payward will implement Nasdaq’s market-surveillance tools across multiple asset classes and trading venues. The deal represents a significant deepening of ties that began in March 2024 when the companies first outlined plans to connect Nasdaq’s proposed issuer-sponsored tokens with Payward’s xStocks tokenized-equity ecosystem.

The partnership reflects broader industry trends toward convergence between traditional and digital asset markets. As tokenized equities gain traction among institutional investors seeking efficiency and programmability, established exchanges are positioning themselves to serve this emerging segment. Nasdaq’s decision to anchor its tokenized-equity strategy to Kraken underscores the crypto exchange’s evolution from a speculative trading venue toward an infrastructure provider for regulated financial products.

Nasdaq Surveillance System to Span Crypto and Traditional Markets

Under the expanded partnership, Payward will deploy Nasdaq’s surveillance infrastructure across a diverse portfolio of trading venues encompassing cryptocurrency, equities, tokenized equities, futures and options. This extension moves the relationship beyond settlement and distribution frameworks for planned Nasdaq Equity Tokens into the operational layer of trade monitoring and compliance. The announcement does not specify which Payward venues will implement the tools first or provide a completion timeline for full deployment.

The surveillance component addresses a critical gap in the crypto industry, where trading volumes have expanded faster than monitoring capabilities. Nasdaq’s market-surveillance systems, refined over decades of operating traditional equity markets, represent among the most sophisticated detection frameworks for market abuse, spoofing and manipulation. Integrating these tools into crypto trading venues signals recognition that institutional participation and regulatory acceptance require parity in compliance rigor with legacy markets.

Regulatory bodies have repeatedly flagged inadequate surveillance as a barrier to approving spot crypto ETFs and other regulated products. By embedding Nasdaq-grade monitoring across multiple asset classes, Payward may strengthen the compliance posture of its parent company Kraken and demonstrate to regulators that crypto platforms can meet institutional standards for market integrity.

Investment Terms Remain Opaque Pending Closing

The announcement describes an agreement to invest rather than a completed transaction, and discloses no closing date, Payward valuation, ownership stake or governance rights for Nasdaq. This lack of specificity leaves open the extent of influence Nasdaq may eventually hold over Payward’s operations and strategic direction. The proposal requires Payward and Nasdaq to execute a definitive agreement before capital changes hands.

Such conditional announcements are common in venture capital and strategic investment scenarios, allowing both parties to negotiate final terms while publicly signaling commitment to a partnership. However, the absence of clear milestones or conditions precedent creates uncertainty around timing and ultimate deal structure. Investors and market observers will likely scrutinize whether regulatory approval or other factors might delay or reshape the transaction.

Nasdaq Equity Tokens Scheduled for Q2 2027 Debut

The two companies now expect Nasdaq Equity Tokens to launch in the second quarter of 2027, according to the September 10 announcement. Nasdaq has described NETs as issuer-sponsored tokens designed to preserve issuer control and the legal and regulatory rights of underlying shares, distinguishing them from third-party tokenized-stock products already trading on Kraken and other platforms.

The 2027 timeline reflects both the technical complexity and regulatory uncertainty surrounding issuer-sponsored tokenized equities. Unlike existing tokenized-equity products, which wrap traditional shares in blockchain-native wrappers, Nasdaq’s approach aims to create native tokens that retain full legal standing as equity securities. This requires coordinating with regulators, issuers and market infrastructure providers to establish settlement procedures, custody arrangements and corporate-action protocols adapted for onchain markets.

Payward’s role spans both transaction infrastructure and monitoring: the company will function as a gateway and settlement participant for NETs while serving as a customer for Nasdaq’s surveillance stack. The dual positioning makes Kraken’s parent an essential intermediary in Nasdaq’s vision for bringing institutional-grade tokenized equities to regulated onchain markets. The 2027 timeline gives both companies roughly two years to finalize operational systems, secure regulatory approvals and test integration between issuer-sponsored tokens and existing crypto trading infrastructure.

Success depends partly on regulatory clarity around tokenized equities, which remains evolving. The SEC, FINRA and other bodies have not yet issued comprehensive guidance on issuer-sponsored token frameworks, leaving room for interpretation and potential shifts in requirements as the 2027 launch approaches.

Nasdaq and Payward have not disclosed whether other trading platforms will gain access to Nasdaq’s surveillance tools or whether the integration timeline for NETs will shift as regulatory requirements become clearer. The operational bridge between issuer-sponsored tokens and onchain settlement remains untested at scale.

Digital asset equities show minimal price fluctuation during weekend trading as liquidity dries up without institutional participation

BlockWest News Team DeFi & Web3, Digital Assets, RWA & Tokenization blockchain, Coinbase, crypto, DeFi, tokenized equities

Coinbase’s tokenized stock offerings on Base can trade around the clock, but their underlying equities and lending infrastructure remain tethered to traditional market hours, creating a structural mismatch that weekend trading volume has yet to stress-test. The tokens stayed within 0.6% of Friday’s prices over the weekend, but that stability masks unresolved risks for DeFi collateral use.

Four Coinbase B20 tokens (AAPLc, GOOGLc, METAc, NVDAc) traded within 0.6% of Friday equity reference prices on Sunday despite closed primary markets.
Chainlink’s 24/5 equity feeds held stale Friday timestamps through the weekend, with no automatic price updates during market closure.
Aave V3 on Base contained no active reserves or collateral parameters for any of the four tokens as of the Sunday review.

0.6% Maximum price deviation from held equity values observed in weekend DEX trading
35-38 hours Duration of the schedule mismatch between frozen reference feeds and active token trading

Coinbase launched four blockchain-based stock tokens on Base, enabling users outside the United States to gain exposure to Apple, Alphabet, Meta and Nvidia through onchain assets that trade continuously, even when the US equity market closes. The tokens confer beneficial ownership claims on underlying shares held within Coinbase’s tokenization structure and are marketed as building blocks for decentralized finance applications, particularly as collateral on lending protocols like Aave. A technical review over the weekend of August 30 revealed the first concrete evidence of how these products behave when primary markets are offline, alongside critical gaps in their supporting infrastructure.

The launch reflects a broader industry trend of bridging traditional equity markets and blockchain infrastructure. Tokenized equities allow institutional and retail investors to access fractional ownership with the settlement speed and interoperability benefits of blockchain networks. Coinbase’s approach uses Ethereum’s Base network, a Layer 2 scaling solution, to minimize transaction costs while maintaining composability with existing DeFi ecosystems. However, this innovation introduces timing asymmetries that conventional equity markets have never required infrastructure to handle.

Weekend Token Prices Hovered Near Stale Equity Benchmarks

At 05:45 to 05:47 UTC on Sunday, August 30, the four leading Aerodrome automated market maker pools on Base showed approximately $6.07 million in displayed liquidity and $7.08 million in 24-hour trading volume. Comparing the DEX prices against Chainlink’s official reference feeds, which had last updated on Friday, revealed tight spreads: AAPLc traded at $320.52 versus a held Friday value of $320.31 (a 0.067% gap), GOOGLc at $346.42 versus $346.73 (a 0.090% gap), METAc at $579.76 versus $577.54 (a 0.384% gap), and NVDAc at $218.98 versus $217.77 (a 0.556% gap).

The small observed dislocations suggest orderly market behavior during the closure window, with traders choosing prices close to the last available equity benchmarks despite the absence of fresh primary-market discovery. The price discipline likely reflects the relatively modest liquidity depth and the short duration of the weekend window, which does not yet test scenarios where material external news or market sentiment shifts occur after Friday’s close. However, the tight spreads carry important limitations: they represent a single point-in-time snapshot against information that stopped updating on Friday, do not guarantee execution quality for larger orders, and provide no information about what happens if token prices move sharply in either direction while reference feeds remain frozen.

The stability during this initial weekend period demonstrates that spot market arbitrage mechanisms can function without continuous price feeds, provided trading volumes remain modest and sentiment stays aligned with the last-known equity values. Market-making algorithms on Aerodrome appear to have weighted historical equity data and available order flow equally, resulting in prices that drifted minimally from stale benchmarks. This behavior may not persist as trading volumes increase or as real news events occur between Friday close and Monday open.

Chainlink Feeds Locked in Friday Prices Through Weekend Hours

Coinbase’s B20 tokens use Chainlink’s 24/5 total-return feeds, which derive from the underlying equity price multiplied by a specified multiplier rather than from the token’s onchain DEX price. On weekends and holidays, these feeds hold their last update and stop advancing the updatedAt timestamp, maintaining the Friday close information through the entire closure window. The official Chainlink documentation describes this scheduled behavior and instructs protocol developers to inspect staleness bounds, avoid relying on frozen data for liquidations, and apply explicit staleness checks in their contract logic.

The schedule mismatch between continuous token trading and halted reference updates remained present for roughly 35 to 38 hours at the Sunday snapshot.

This separation becomes material if the DEX market experiences sharp price movement during a closed reference window. A rise in the token price would not automatically lift the feed calculated from the held equity value, while a decline would require equally explicit contract-level handling to prevent a lending protocol from relying on stale data to trigger liquidations. Coinbase’s prospectus for the NVDA token preserves business-day dependencies for underlying settlement, stating that cash or stablecoin settlement requires the issuer to sell shares after validating a redemption request, meaning instant weekend arbitrage cannot be assumed even while the token trades continuously.

The risk architecture here differs fundamentally from traditional equity indices or ETFs, which close their own trading windows in sync with primary market hours. Tokenized equities create a new category of assets where settlement constraints and trading availability operate on misaligned clocks. Over longer periods, geopolitical events, earnings surprises or macroeconomic data released outside US market hours could cause the onchain market price to diverge materially from the held reference feed, creating opportunities for arbitrage or liquidation cascades depending on how lending protocols are configured.

Aave Integration Remains Unrealized, Leaving Collateral Safety Unresolved

A review of the official Aave V3 Base deployment list on Sunday found no active reserves, aTokens, debt tokens or oracle entries for any of the four Coinbase stock tokens. Base’s integration guide describes Aave as a use case for the tokens, citing a borrowing example prominently, yet the actual collateral layer does not exist in live form. An August 3 Aave governance proposal indicated that initial assets, oracle configuration, risk framework and deployment contracts for Aave V4 on Base would be finalized and published at a later date, establishing direction without resolving B20 asset parameters.

Base’s reference to Aave describes an integration goal; a live lending market requires deployed reserves and inspectable parameters.

Technical analysis of B20 collateral infrastructure

Until Aave publishes reserve configuration for the four tokens, no defensible loan-to-value ratio, liquidation threshold, supply cap, borrow cap or liquidation activity can be assessed. Any eventual lending deployment would need explicit oracle-freshness checks and policies for managing deposits, borrowing and liquidations during the closed reference periods, supported by conservative LTV settings and supply caps that could buffer the timing mismatch. The weekend trading record demonstrates orderly secondary-market pricing, but collateral safety depends on infrastructure that exists only as a stated integration goal.

The absence of live Aave integration also reflects a measured approach by the DeFi protocol, which has developed a reputation for conservative risk management following the market stress events of 2022 and 2023. Deploying tokenized equities as collateral requires novel safeguards that traditional lending markets never confronted, including explicit handling of market-hours mismatches, settlement delays and regulatory dependencies that could affect the underlying equity positions themselves.

Coinbase has made the market-hours mismatch visible onchain through live trading data; the decisive test of whether this structural gap becomes a real collateral risk will begin only after Aave publishes its B20 reserve parameters and users begin posting debt against the tokens.
