AMD acquires World Labs for 8.2 billion in stock
AMD is spending $8.2 billion in stock to buy World Labs, the world-model startup founded by Stanford AI researcher Fei-Fei Li, marking the chipmaker’s most aggressive move yet into AI research talent. The deal, disclosed Monday, is AMD’s second-largest acquisition ever and lands amid a broader scramble by Nvidia, Meta and OpenAI to buy their way into frontier AI labs.
- AMD is acquiring World Labs for approximately $8.2 billion in an all-stock transaction
- The deal ranks as AMD’s second-largest purchase, behind the roughly $50 billion Xilinx acquisition in 2022
- Fei-Fei Li will join AMD as chief scientist and executive vice president once the deal closes
- $8.2B value of AMD’s all-stock acquisition of World Labs
- $50B AMD’s prior record deal, its 2022 purchase of Xilinx
- $6.4B OpenAI’s purchase price for Jony Ive’s startup io
- $14B Meta’s 2025 investment for a minority stake in Scale AI
AMD confirmed Monday that it has agreed to acquire World Labs, a San Francisco-based AI lab that builds so-called world models, systems designed to simulate three-dimensional environments rather than generate text or images. According to reporting by CNBC, the deal values World Labs at roughly $8.2 billion and will be paid entirely in AMD stock. AMD had already held an investment stake in the startup before agreeing to buy it outright.
AMD’s second-largest deal ever trails only its $50 billion Xilinx buyout
The World Labs purchase is AMD’s biggest acquisition since it paid roughly $50 billion for chipmaker Xilinx in 2022. At $8.2 billion, it is a far smaller check than that deal, but it signals AMD is now willing to spend heavily on AI research assets rather than only chip manufacturing capacity.
AMD plans to keep World Labs operating separately from its core semiconductor business until the transaction closes later this year. The company said the lab’s ongoing research into next-generation world models will help AMD’s chip designers anticipate what AI hardware needs to support years before those workloads become mainstream.
Fei-Fei Li’s Marble demo showed AI building 3D scenes from a few images
World Labs was founded by Fei-Fei Li, a Stanford professor widely regarded as an AI pioneer who previously led AI research at Google. Earlier this year, Li and AMD chief executive Lisa Su demonstrated a World Labs tool called Marble that generated a three-dimensional scene from a handful of still images.
Researchers view world models as a building block for robotics and other AI systems that need to understand and act in physical space, rather than just process language or images. Under the agreement, Li will become AMD’s chief scientist and an executive vice president, giving her a direct role shaping the company’s AI hardware roadmap.
AI talent deals now run from $6.4 billion to $33 billion across rivals
AMD’s move lands in the middle of an unusually active stretch of AI acquisitions by the industry’s largest companies. OpenAI purchased Jony Ive’s device startup io for about $6.4 billion to secure the former Apple designer, while Meta committed $14 billion in 2025 for a minority stake in Scale AI that brought founder Alexandr Wang in to run a new AI division.
Nvidia has been the most acquisitive of the group, spending a combined $33 billion on chipmaker Groq and open-source platform Hugging Face, the Groq assets acquired in December and the Hugging Face deal agreed this month. Against that backdrop, AMD’s $8.2 billion outlay for World Labs is smaller in dollar terms but notable for what it buys: a research lab led by one of the field’s most cited scientists rather than a hardware asset or a chip design house.
The BlockWest read. The comparison worth watching is not the price tag but the payment method. AMD is using stock, not cash, to buy research talent, betting its own equity will keep appreciating as it converts World Labs’ science into chip design decisions. That trade only pays off if AMD’s data-center AI chip revenue actually benefits from years-ahead visibility into workload demands, a bet balance sheets at Nvidia and Meta are not making the same way.
AMD expects the acquisition to close later this year, at which point World Labs will begin integrating with AMD’s chip design operations while Li takes up her chief scientist role; the terms of that integration, and how much independence the lab retains, remain undisclosed.
