Ethereum developers ship last-minute patch before Glamsterdam test
Ethereum core developers shipped an emergency software patch hours before a key network test, closing a gap that could have undermined the very capacity increase the test was designed to measure. The episode shows how much manual coordination still underpins Ethereum’s test-network rehearsals ahead of its next major upgrade, Glamsterdam.
- Prysm released version 7.2.1 late Monday (October 5) with the 200 million gas limit built in by default.
- Glamsterdam activated on the Sepolia test network at 13:53:36 UTC on Tuesday, October 6.
- The upgrade raises Sepolia’s gas limit from roughly 60 million to 200 million, more than tripling block capacity.
- 200M new Sepolia gas limit, more than triple the prior setting
- 60M Sepolia’s previous default gas limit before Tuesday’s test
- 7.2.1 Prysm version released late Monday with the fix built in
- 13:53:36 UTC exact activation time for Glamsterdam on Sepolia, Oct. 6
Ethereum developers pushed out the last-minute update ahead of Tuesday’s Glamsterdam test on Sepolia, according to reporting by CoinDesk. Glamsterdam is Ethereum’s next major upgrade, and Sepolia is the test network where developers rehearse protocol changes using tokens that carry no real value. Tuesday’s test raises Sepolia’s gas limit, the unit Ethereum uses to measure how much computing work fits into a block, from about 60 million to 200 million.
Prysm 7.2.1 closes a last-minute configuration gap
Prysm is one of the software clients validators run to process and propose Ethereum blocks. Its previous release was finalized before the 200 million gas setting was added to Sepolia’s configuration, meaning validators still on that version would have kept proposing blocks at the old 60 million limit.
Fixing that required either the new release or a manual configuration change by individual node operators. Developers opted for the former, publishing version 7.2.1 late Monday with the higher limit built in automatically.
A more than threefold jump in block capacity goes live on Sepolia
Validators running the updated Prysm client began proposing 200 million-gas blocks automatically once Glamsterdam activated on Sepolia at 13:53:36 UTC on October 6. Had a meaningful share of validators stayed on the prior version, some blocks would have been produced at the old 60 million limit, diluting a test meant to show how the network performs at triple its previous capacity.
Gas limits govern how much transaction and computation data a block can hold. Raising the ceiling lets Ethereum process more activity per block, but it also increases the computing and bandwidth demands placed on the machines that run validator software.
Ethereum has been lifting block capacity in incremental steps, testing how far validators can go before running a node becomes too demanding or costly for ordinary operators. More block space can eventually support higher transaction throughput, more stablecoin transfers and other on-chain activity before users start competing for space and pushing fees higher.
Mainnet capacity decision still awaits Sepolia’s results
The 200 million gas setting applies only to Sepolia for now. Glamsterdam has not yet activated on Ethereum’s main network.
Tuesday’s test is meant to show whether validators can consistently handle blocks more than three times Sepolia’s previous default size without degrading network performance. Developers will use the results to decide how much of that added capacity is appropriate to carry over when Glamsterdam eventually activates on Ethereum’s main chain.
The BlockWest read. The patch matters less for what it fixed than for what it reveals: mainnet-bound capacity decisions still hinge on client teams catching configuration mismatches within a day of activation. Validator operators and staking infrastructure providers should treat testnet upgrade windows as operationally live, not ceremonial, since a missed update can silently skew the data developers use to size Ethereum’s real capacity.
Developers will now assess how validators performed under the 200 million gas load on Sepolia before setting a timeline or target capacity for Glamsterdam’s activation on Ethereum’s main network, a decision that remains open.
